You may not remember Hurricane Alex, but it formed in mid-January this year, long before the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1. And now we have Hurricane Otto, which passed from the Atlantic to the Eastern Pacific Ocean yesterday, setting a record for the latest landfall in any calendar year in the Atlantic basin, according to Weather Underground here, along with several other records.
This makes 2016 a year with essentially a year-long hurricane season, although of course there were several months of inactivity after Hurricane Alex. You can read more about it from Dr. Marshall Shepherd of UGA in his Forbes.com blog here.
