The latest Drought Monitor, released last week Thursday, show some slight improvements in northern parts of the region but conditions that are getting worse in southern parts of the region. The improvements were driven by rainfall of an inch or more with 2-3 inches in a few scattered spots. I was surprised that they made improvements in the map so quickly since the drought has been around for a long time, and other folk I talked to were also surprised, but the improvements were made in spite of recommendations from local observers to limit changes this week. So far this month most of the Southeast has not received much if any rain, so we may see a swing back to more drought in next week’s map.
