The updated monthly outlook for May 2026 was released last week by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. It shows that nearly all of the region does not show a tendency towards above or below normal precipitation or temperature. However, the southwest corner of Alabama does show a slight tendency towards wetter than normal conditions linked to the seasonal monsoon that is expected to start in New Mexico and nearby areas of the country in the next month. Most of Florida also shows a slight tendency towards warmer than normal conditions, especially in the southern half of the Peninsula. The monthly prediction for drought shows that it is expected to persist but may improve in the area of Alabama that gets more rain.
