The latest Drought Monitor, released today, shows that Tropical Storm Ophelia brought welcome rain to eastern North Carolina and Virginia, relieving some of the dry conditions there. However, the lack of rain in most of the rest of the region led to increases in abnormally dry (D0) and moderate drought (D1) in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. Lack of rain in the next few days is likely to lead to an expansion of drought in next week’s map in all areas but Florida. Puerto Rico also saw an increase in dry conditions this week.
