The latest Drought Monitor, released this morning, shows that the drought in Florida deepened from moderate (D1) to severe (D2) in the south. Abnormally dry conditions (D0) expanded in Virginia, North and South Carolina, and two small areas of moderate drought were introduced to NC this week due to continuing lack of rainfall. Moderate drought also expanded slightly in Georgia this week. There was no change in the coverage of drought in Puerto Rico this week but the area of abnormally dry conditions expanded slightly. Heavy rain in the next week should bring improvements to Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, but other areas could see expansion due to rain missing those areas.
