According to NBC News and reposted by Yahoo News, “natural disasters forced an estimated 3.4 million people in the U.S. to leave their homes in 2022, according to Census Bureau data collected earlier this year, underscoring how climate-related weather events are already changing American communities.” Storms like Hurricane Ian displaced the most people, with floods, fires, and tornadoes causing people to leave their homes. Of those, about 40% returned within a week, but 16% have not returned yet and may never do so, and 12% were out of their homes for more than six months. The severity of these extreme weather events in many cases was made worse by rising temperatures, warmer sea surfaces, and increased drought related to our changing climate.
