In this blog I often write about the damage caused by tropical storm such as Irma, Michael, and Ian. But I don’t often see stories about how the affected farmers are recovering from their losses. Here is a Southeast Farm Press story about the Bahamas that makes me feel very good about the role that Extension can play in helping a community recover from a devastating storm. You might recall the direct hit that part of the Bahamas took from Hurricane Dorian in 2019 but might not realize how the storm decimated agriculture in that part of the country. A faith-based group called Convoy of Hope went to the islands to help farmers recover from the storm and partnered with the University of Missouri Extension to provide expert help in soil testing, composting, crop choices, and other agricultural activities that were needed by farmers to recover from Dorian’s impacts.
