Today is the first day of astronomical fall, as we cross the ecliptic and start to see days that are shorter than 12 hours due to the tilt of the earth’s North Pole away from the sun. And even though it’s felt like summer for most of the month, the cold front that went through today will bring decidedly cooler and drier air into the region, making it feel like fall at last. These conditions should last for a while, so rejoice and spend time outside! You can read more about the autumnal equinox at EarthSky here and Space here.
