NOAA released their latest ENSO outlook today. It shows considerable uncertainty in whether the La Nina will go away and conditions will return to neutral or if La Nina will continue, with variation between different computer models. The overall outlook is for a slight edge towards the continuation of La Nina conditions over the summer, increasing in likelihood in the fall. At this point, it does not appear that we will return to an El Nino any time soon. However, keep in mind that predictability is low in spring so this could change in a few months. La Nina has fewer impacts on summer climate conditions than it does on winter climate, but it does enhance the development of tropical systems in the Atlantic basin, so you can expect another busy year with more tropical storms than usual. Where they go cannot be determined at this time, but that will help determine whether we get excess rain this growing season (if the storms go over the Southeast) or if we have a drought (if the storms go west to Texas or up the East Coast).
