The latest Drought Monitor, released today, shows that abnormally dry (D0) conditions have expanded to cover more than 40% of the region, and moderate drought (D1) has been introduced to or expanded in every state except for Virginia. The presence of high pressure over the region coupled with warm temperatures and little rain led to the expansion. In Puerto Rico there was no change in drought status this week. Further expansion is likely in Florida and in southern Alabama and Georgia next week due to relatively little rainfall in the next five days, although North Carolina may see some relief.
