Do you think that we are the coldest in the winter months because the Earth is farther from the sun in those months than in our Northern Hemisphere summer? Actually, Earth is closer to the sun in January than in July because of its elliptical orbit around the sun. The difference in solar radiation is small between those months compared to the larger variation caused the tilt of the earth’s axis toward the sun in Northern Hemisphere summer and away in NH winter. In fact, the perihelion (the day on which we are closest to the sun) is on January 3-4 this year (depending on which time zone you live in).
