Today Tropical Storm Nicholas formed in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to move gradually northward and hug the coast of Texas, bringing heavy rain and some storm surge to areas along the coast. Eventually it will work its way north to a landfall in eastern Texas or western Louisiana. It will eventually move north and then northeast but should not bring much weather to the Southeast other than some potential light rain to Alabama and some high clouds blowing off the top of the storm, although folks in the mountains should keep an eye out just in case it moves east of its current prediction. You can see updates at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at4.shtml?start#contents.

Elsewhere there is an area with a 50% potential of developing off the East Coast but that should not affect the Southeast. A new wave is predicted to move off the coast of Africa tomorrow and that also has a 60% chance of developing over the next five days, but nothing that will affect the Southeast any time soon if at all.
