In this blog I tend to focus on the relationship between the phase of ENSO (El Nino or La Nina or neutral) and what climate conditions are likely to happen here in the Southeast as well as how those conditions will affect our crops. But ENSO actually affects weather across the whole globe, so if you are watching the global markets for corn, cotton, or other crops to see how prices may be affected by weather conditions in far-flung parts of the earth, you need to know those relationships, too. Here is a good article in NOAA’s Climate blog describing the global effects of ENSO on crop yields in many of the primary crop-growing regions of the world. The author Weston Anderson also describes the effects of having two La Ninas in a row, as it looks like we might be having this year.
