According to an article this week in Vegetable and Specialty Crop News, the citrus industry in northern Florida and southern Georgia is increasing rapidly, with acreage in North Florida at around 1,200 acres and in South Georgia at around 2,000 acres. I have worked with a few of the producers, who are growing satsumas and other cold-hardy varieties but are expanding into grapefruit and other crops. Part of this growth is to plant citrus crops in areas that have not been affected by citrus greening (at least so far). Other reasons are to expand to the north as temperatures increase and to take advantage of local markets that pay a premium for crops that are produced in state.
