The latest Drought Monitor, released this morning, shows that while drought did not expand in Alabama, abnormally dry conditions expanded in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia with little rain and warm temperatures making for pleasant but dry weather. Now that plants are coming out of dormancy and temperatures are going up, we can expect to see increases in both evapotranspiration and evaporation, which pull water out of the soil. Some of our wetter areas are loving the drier, sunnier weather, but the areas that got missed by the storms this winter could use some moisture. I know that the ground cover around my house in Athens GA is looking stressed from the lack of rain. We should see more seasonal rain in most of the region in the next seven days except for the Florida peninsula, which will continue to see fairly dry conditions.
