With all of the cold air this year, chill hours for fruit are in good shape, and I’ve been told by peach experts that the buds are already swelling in the orchards, although they are not yet blooming. A good warm spell will probably be enough to break dormancy. But because we are not past the average date of last frost, and this has been a very up-and-down winter temperature-wise, producers are worried about the potential for a normal or late frost to occur after the trees start blooming. So far, the longer-range forecasts are not showing much frost in Alabama and Georgia except for the far northern parts of those states for the next three weeks (after this weekend), but that could change as newer information comes in.
