The tremendous cold that has covered Texas, brought snow to the beach in Galveston, and knocked out power to millions of customers in record-setting cold have also affected many producers across the state, including the fields in south Texas that usually produce a lot of food this time of year. According to The Packer, “it may be a week or so before growers know the extent of the crop damage. Tender leafy greens like spinach, kale and celery will likely bear the worst of the cold’s effects and could be done for the season, but hardier items such as cabbage, onions and citrus could potentially survive, although growers do expect reductions in yields.” You can read more here.
