Dairy cattle put off a lot of heat as they digest their food and produce milk, and in warm conditions, that can put them under stress. A new study in California that was published recently in Inside Climate News showed that a combination of fans and sprinkling that were run by decision-making tools to calculate how often the cows needed to be cooled has resulted in savings in both water use and energy to run the fans, since the cooling system is run only when it calculates that that cows are entering a period of heat stress. Since California’s temperatures are rising, this should result in significant savings to the dairy producers.
