Those of us who study climate know that agricultural methods that promote healthy lands can also help absorb carbon and improve our atmosphere as well as save farmers money. In a rare bill that has gained acceptance from both Republicans and Democrats, Congress is attempting to recognize this by trying to pass a bill which will give farmers credits for undertaking activities like planting trees and capturing methane from cattle. Many activities that farmers do to take care of their land and to preserve topsoil also save money. In this case, the results of this law could result in carbon credits that could add to farm income, which is especially valuable when farm sales are smaller than usual due to the pandemic.
