The end of March has come, and what a month it has been! While climate is not on the top of many folks’ minds these days, it’s still a welcome diversion from other conversations. This March has been well above normal across the region again, and many stations experienced temperatures that were ranked in the top five for their periods of record. A few long-term stations like Montgomery AL and Meridian MS had their warmest Marches on record.

Precipitation across the region varied a lot again in March as heavy rain fell again in northern areas while the southern areas were much drier than average. This was particularly true in Florida, where many stations recorded their driest March ever. The dry area stretched through the entire state and west into southern Alabama and Mississippi.

Similar patterns of temperature and precipitation are seen for the year to date, which just shows how persistent the pattern has been this year. You can create the year to date maps using the Southeast Regional Climate Center’s Perspectives tool at https://sercc.com/perspectives.
