Vidalia onions are one of Georgia’s signature crops, and every year the Vidalia Onion Committee and the Georgia Department of Agriculture set a release date based on the crop readiness, weather conditions, and other factors. This year they have set the date for the release of the onions as April 16, and consumers are already asking about how the onions look this year. Rainfall in the Vidalia region has been much above average for the year to date, and the UGA Weather Network station at Vidalia has received 18.46 inches since January 1. I am sure that this has been of concern to onion producers as they harvest their crop, but have not heard of any major issues with this year’s crop, which is expected to be strong this season.
