The latest report on Georgia’s pecan harvest shows that this year’s harvest is better than last year’s, when Hurricane Michael dropped many nuts and destroyed huge numbers of pecan trees. However, this year’s production is still only about half of what it was prior to Hurricane Michael, and it is likely to be many years before full production is back because of damage to the trees and the need to plant new trees where orchards blew down. Fortunately for producers, the price of pecans is up this year due to high international demand. The dry weather this fall also hampered yields by keeping the nuts from filling properly.
