Now that it is fall, livestock producers are starting to think about how to feed their cattle over the winter. If you use warm-season forages, then you have to feed hay or grain to your cattle over the winter months. Adding cool-season annual forages to the mix can cut costs and keep your cattle healthy. The University of Florida’s IFAS Extension group produced this article which describes how to determine whether it is cost effective to add cool-season annual forages to your mix. This year could be a tough start, however, with dry conditions making it hard to get new fields established, at least until wetter conditions return.
