The latest Drought Monitor, released this morning, shows that the areas of abnormally dry conditions (D0) and moderate drought (D1) expanded again this week. They now cover the southeastern third of Alabama, the western Florida panhandle, most of the southern half of Georgia, and parts of coastal South and North Carolina as well as a few spots on the east coast of Florida. Fortunately, quite a bit of rain is expected in the next week, which may knock back some of the abnormally dry conditions or at least prevent any more expansion. The driest area in the next week is in southern Florida, so they are unlikely to see the D0 regions removed in next week’s map.
