Did you know that for meteorologists and climatologists, winter is over? We use December 1 through February 28 (or 29 in leap years) as the winter season. Spring starts for us on March 1 and goes until May 31. This past winter was expected to be wetter and cooler than normal due to the expected El Niño, which only officially developed this month, although its influence was seen through the winter. In spite of some cold blasts, however, the winter overall was warmer than normal, especially in February. A number of stations will be ranked in the top ten warmest, especially stations with relatively short records. A much higher number will be ranked in the top five wettest, including most of the stations in the northern half of Alabama and Georgia and western parts of North and South Carolina and Virginia as well as parts of Florida. You can find rankings from the Southeast Regional Climate Center’s Perspectives tool at https://www.sercc.com/perspectives.
