The Southeast Farm Press posted an interesting story today which describes how weather and climate impact the development of a uniform field of corn, which is key to getting the top yields. One of things that is needed is a string of 4 days in a row with temperatures at or above 60 F. This year’s El Niño is good for NC corn farmers because it means that there will be more days than usual at or above 60 F, which should help make fields sprout more uniformly. You can read more details about how corn establishment and production is impacted by weather here.
