In the past I’ve discussed the CoCoRaHS network and how citizen scientists from all across the US (and now in Canada and the Bahamas, too) measure daily rainfall using a simple rain gauge. These measurements are invaluable in providing ground truth to what is estimated by radars. Here is a neat story about the woman who measured 34.00 inches of rainfall in Hurricane Florence a few days ago, a reading that may well set a new record for the state of North Carolina. You can read it at the Weather Channel at https://weather.com/news/news/2018-09-18-measuring-34-inches-of-rain-hurricane-florence.
Thanks to all of our CoCoRaHS and other weather observers for the work they do in keeping us informed and helping the National Weather Service to keep us safe!
