My friend David Stooksbury, the former Georgia State Climatologist, pointed out today that the three week period ending today is among the top five driest for this time of year for parts of northern Georgia, most of South Carolina, and some stations in North Carolina. Atlanta and Athens are both the driest on record for their airport stations going back 89 years and 75 years, respectively. You can check out the rankings at the Southeast Regional Climate Center’s Perspectives tool at https://www.sercc.com/perspectives using the regional map tab.  Rain for the next week is expected to be light except where affected by Hurricane Florence, whose path is still  evolving as the hurricane moves westward, so no relief is seen anytime soon. The last three weeks have also been in the top five warmest for many stations in the eastern half of our region, with a number of stations at all-time highs. The dryness is not good for farmers who are trying to finish off their crops for this year or get in another cutting of hay, although the dry conditions have been welcomed by grape producers and farmers whose crops are ready for harvest.
