Record-setting February warmth across most of Southeast

The preliminary maps for February 2018’s climate show that most of the region experienced temperatures of roughly ten degrees F above normal. This far surpassed the previous records at many stations, most of which were set in the past few years. Quite a contrast from January! Precipitation was below average in the Florida peninsula and coastal areas of the other states, while significant rains fell farther to the north and west as expected due to the La Niña which is currently occurring. The rains that did fell have eroded drought in many parts of the region and removed it altogether in some places in spite of the warm temperatures.
