I’ve seen an interesting story this week in a couple of news outlets describing a recent study which linked volcanic eruptions at high latitudes to the flood climatology of the Nile and also to uprisings in Egypt during the reign of Cleopatra.  Using ice corp data and climate modeling, scientists were able to link low flood periods to volcanic eruptions as far away as Alaska and Iceland.  The lack of floods in the Nile River led to famines which caused uprisings in the local communities.  You can read more about this at National Geographic at https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/10/volcanoes-Nile-flood-climate-Egypt/ and in MotherBoard at Vice here.
