Food & Wine magazine put out an article this week about a change in the diet of Alaskan bears due to changes in climate which have affected the production of two of the bears’ favorite foods: salmon and wild berries.  The increased temperatures in recent years have brought an earlier start to the berry ripening season, bringing it into line with the season for the salmon run rather than falling later as it has in the past.  The bears, which formerly ate salmon swimming upstream to lay eggs, are now choosing to eat the berries instead since they have a choice.  In spite of the article’s title, the bears are not becoming vegetarian, but their diet is changing due to differences in when their preferred foods become available.  You can read the full article here.
