Have you ever heard the comment that in the 1970s climate scientists were talking about global cooling?  I get this statement frequently when I give talks to the public.  And yet, this was proven false a decade ago.  This article from the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (which popped up in my Facebook feed yesterday) describes how the myth got started and why it has been perpetuated.   Since it is a journal article, it is a little more technical than most of the articles I link to in this blog, but I think you will get a good feel for how this myth was perpetuated. It brings back good memories to me because I was a friend of Reid Bryson, the scientist featured at the beginning of the article, when I was working in Wisconsin.

UPDATE: Here’s an article from Time magazine that discusses this at a more popular level: https://time.com/4778937/fake-time-cover-ice-age/?xid=newsletter-brief.
