Tropical season starts early with Subtropical Depression 1 in the Atlantic

The Atlantic tropical season is off to an early start this year with the development of Subtropical Depression 1 well out in the Atlantic Ocean.  A subtropical storm has some characteristics of tropical storms and some that make it look more like a mid-latitude cyclone. The official start of the tropical season is June, but storms occasionally develop well ahead of that date.  The last time a storm developed in April was 2003.  You can see a video of the storm from CIMSS here.  You can get updates on the storm, which is well out to sea and not expected to hit the US, at the National Hurricane Center at  Wunderground also has some tracking maps at
