The latest Drought Monitor shows the expansion of abnormally dry conditions across Florida and the Carolinas this week, due in part to low rainfall amounts and also to the very warm temperatures the region has experienced this past week.  Areas of moderate drought have also been added to parts of northern Virginia and southern Florida.  Florida is normally fairly dry this time of year, but it has been much drier than it usually is, leading to the drought designation.  The small area of extreme drought in Alabama has been removed but extreme drought has expanded slightly in northern Georgia, as has the severe drought region in northern Alabama.  The continuation of warm and dry conditions this week may lead to further expansions in next week’s Monitor.  Stay tuned!
