On Saturday November 19, NOAA is planning to launch a new satellite into space.  This satellite, known as GOES-R, will be the most advanced weather satellite ever developed.  The GOES satellites orbit the earth 22,000 miles above the earth’s surface so they can remain directly over the same spot as the Earth rotates around its axis.  The new satellite will be able to take pictures every 30 seconds, much faster than the current satellites, which will be especially useful for rapidly developing severe weather.

You can watch a countdown until the launch at https://www.goes-r.gov/ and see more pictures about the development of GOES-R.  You can also read more about it at Nature at https://www.nature.com/news/us-to-launch-its-most-advanced-weather-satellite-yet-1.20970 or at Forbes.com or watch the video and read the promotional material below.  Bon voyage, GOES-R!
