The WunderBlog has a great new article on the heat wave that is dominating weather across much of the US.  The author Bob Henson notes that “As a very strong Pacific jet continues to pump mild air into the nation, we could see a few all-time monthly records for November threatened later next week, especially across the U.S. South.”  While we are likely to shift into a colder pattern later in November or in December, the widespread warmth is expected to continue for the next week.

The article also has an interesting discussion of the lack of record lows, which have been decreasing since 1980 with the onset of warmer and warmer years in recent decades.  What is even more amazing is that 2016 has had a “phenomenally low” number of record cold events compared to previous years.  Of course this could change if we have a major cold outbreak before the end of the year but the odds against that are getting higher as the calendar winds down.
