The Southeast Farm Press published a story by Dennis Hancock, UGA forage expert, on how to handle feeding livestock in the extreme drought that is plaguing parts of Georgia and Alabama.  You can read it here.

Until the drought lifts, which seems unlikely anytime soon, livestock producers will have to continue to cull cattle, import hay from Southeast Georgia or other wetter locations, and hope for enough rain to plant small grains in the next couple of weeks, or rye grass if the rain doesn’t come until later.  There are several other tips that Dennis has for “hunkering down” and getting through this dry time that you may find useful.  Dennis also warns that next year the weeds could be particularly bad because of overgrazed pastures

Julie Walker of the South Dakota University Extension provides some additional information on alternate forages here.
