The USDA’s Southern Research Station posted an article discussing the replacement of loblolly pines with longleaf pines after damage by hurricanes or other strong wind events.  Longleaf pines are more resilient to wind and forest fire damage and are also less affected by pine beetles, but have been largely replaced by loblolly pines grown in plantations.  Since Hurricane Hermine caused some wind damage in the Southeast, land owners with significant tree loss might consider the switch.  You can read more at https://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/compass/2016/09/08/reforesting-with-longleaf-pine-after-hurricane-damage/.
