For farmers in India, the rains from the monsoon can make or break their crops for the year.  This seasonal onset of the rainy season varies from one place to another and is linked to land-ocean temperature differences between the Indian Ocean and the Indian subcontinent.  It is also intimately linked to the El Niño and La Niña cycle.

In the past most of the forecasting in India has been done at very large scales using statistical methods.  But according to the Christian Science Monitor, the Indian government is purchasing a supercomputer which will drastically improve forecasting of the monsoon and other weather features, providing much smaller time and space scales which will help farmers plan for local conditions.  You can read the article at https://www.csmonitor.com/Technology/2016/0609/How-India-s-farmers-hope-to-outsmart-the-monsoons.
