The Packer reported today that the Florida grapefruit season is expected to end earlier than usual this year due to problems caused by El Nino conditions in the state. USDA reported that the crop was the lowest in three decades, according to the report.
Fall and early winter brought warmer than normal temperatures and the lack of cold snaps delayed fruit making color, which required longer de-greening, according to G.T. Parris, domestic sales manager for IMG Citrus Inc.
In addition, the 85 degree days in late December took a toll on the fruit and El Nino disrupted harvesting by bringing wet conditions through the state every two to three days.
