As expected, the tropical Atlantic Ocean has been quiet this hurricane season so far, due primarily to the influence of wind shear associated with the El Nino that is present in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.  On the other hand, the warm ocean water in the Eastern Pacific Ocean is contributing to an active season there.

Dr. Jeff Masters posted a recent article in his Weather Underground blog describing the impacts of El Nino this year.  One of the most interesting subjects he covers is the impact of twin tropical cyclones (one on each side of the Equator) on the development of the El Nino.  The circulation patterns around the two storms is combining to force warm water eastward, heightening the effect of the El Nino and potentially leading to a stronger signal in the coming months.
