The early summary maps for May’s climate are now available at the High Plains Regional Climate Center site.  They show that for most of the Southeast, precipitation was below normal, with the exception of the areas hit by Tropical Storm Ana in the eastern Carolinas and southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia.  The lack of rain and sunny skies contributed to above normal temperatures in almost all of the region.  For areas with irrigation or sufficient rain, this helped crops develop ahead of expected progression.  For dryland farmers, it meant putting some planting of peanuts and other crops on hold until moisture conditions improve.
