The Packer published an article this week which described the impacts of a freeze on January 4 on the production of greens in Georgia (link).
“Temperatures in the Norman Park growing region bottomed out in the low 20s, said Tommy Collinsworth, sales and marketing director for Norman Park-based Baker Farms LLC.
As a result, the week of Jan. 11, the company was picking just 2,000 to 4,000 boxes of greens a day, down from the seasonal norm of 8,000 to 10,000 boxes.”
The article noted that packers were having to sort through the greens leaf by leaf to remove damaged material instead of going through by bunch as usual. Prices went up by as much as $1.50 per box.
The article noted that the freeze damage did not reach down into Florida so production there was not affected.
