A fascinating web site which collects live lightning data is showing a cold front sagging south into northern Georgia and Alabama tonight.  The lightning is occurring in thunderstorms which are forming along the front.  This could cause some locally heavy rain, gusty winds and lightining tonight and mark a return to rainier conditions in the next few days.  In addition, there is a potential for severe weather on Thursday with unstable air moving into the area

.

Lightning strikes on the map are color coded so that the most recent strikes are the brightest and fade with time.  This is a volunteer network which was started in Germany and has expanded to the US and other parts of the world.  You can find the real time map (still in Beta testing mode) as well as archives at www.LightningMaps.org.
