Each day this week we’ll highlight an invasive species that we struggle with here in Camden County.

Today’s plant is air potato vine. Air potato is one of the most noxious plants in Florida and is quickly becoming a significant issue in Georgia as well – especially along the coast. This invasive vine can grow up to 8in per day and smother and choke out the canopy of mature trees (including our majestic live oaks). At each leaf node the plant produces bubils – reproductive structures that look similar to potatoes. These bubils fall to the ground to create new plants. If you have this plant, please get rid of it! If you have questions about this plant, how to get rid of it, or what to replace it with please contact me at 912-576-3219 or jkwarren@uga.edu.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="791" height="1024" src="https://site.extension.uga.edu/camdenanr/files/2022/03/Air-Potato-791x1024.jpg" alt="air potato vine (Discorea bulbifera) growing up tree. introduced to the US from Aftrica.
