Understanding Basics of Emerging Forest Carbon Markets for Income and Mitigating Climate Change

Efforts for mitigating atmospheric carbon are opening new opportunities for forest landowners worldwide. Regulatory and Voluntary Carbon Markets are providing financial incentives for additional carbon stored on family forestlands. A need exists for educating family landowners about voluntary carbon markets, carbon offsets, and the role of carbon payments on overall financial returns. Additionally, it is critical to understand the social acceptability of various practices that can potentially increase carbon stored on family forestlands. In this context, the objectives of the workshop are to a) develop an understanding of forest carbon markets, b) determine the economics of forest carbon payments, c) identify emerging opportunities in the area of forest carbon markets, and d) provide feedback on socially acceptable forest management practices for increasing carbon stored on forestlands.
