Burke – Jenkins Ag News

Production Meeting Schedule

It is hard to believe that Christmas is here! I hope each and everyone has a Merry Christmas and the very best New Year.

As with the arrival of Christmas, it is once again time to start thinking about our commodity production meetings for 2014. We have several meetings planned that I think will be of interest. Please call ahead (982-4408) or e-mail to reserve your spot, as this provides us an accurate head count for food preparation. As always, we appreciate the support of our sponsors!

Multi-County Pecan Production Update

Jenkins County will host a multi-county pecan update on February 4th at 12:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Ag Center. Our speakers for the day will be Dr. Lenny Wells, UGA Pecan Specialist; Dr. Will Hudson, UGA Entomologist; Mr. Jason Brock, UGA Plant Pathologist; and a representative from Rain and Hail Crop Insurance Company will give an update on pecan crop insurance. If you have commercial pecans, this will not be a meeting you will want to miss.

Cotton Production Update

We will be having our annual cotton production update on February 24th at 5:30 p.m. This meeting will be held in the Ag Center. Our speakers for the evening will be Dr. Stanly Culpepper, UGA Cotton Entomologist and Dr. Jared Whitaker, UGA Cotton Specialist. Dr. Culpepper is a known for his comprehensive pigweed control strategies and Dr. Whitaker will spend time on variety selection and plant growth regulator management.

Peanut Production Update

We will have our peanut production meeting on March 3rd at 12:00 p.m. This meeting will be held in the Ag Center. Our speakers for the day will be Dr. Eric Prostko, UGA Weed Specialist and Dr. Bob Kemerait, UGA Plant Pathologist. They will be on hand to provide weed and disease management information. The past several years have plagued us with weed and disease problems, so we are looking forward to their presentations.

If you are interested in attending any of the above meetings, please call the Extension Office and or through e-mail to add your name to the list.
