{"id":201,"date":"2019-08-09T09:22:18","date_gmt":"2019-08-09T13:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/?p=201"},"modified":"2019-08-09T09:22:24","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T13:22:24","slug":"drought-management-strategy-for-bermuda-stem-maggot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/drought-management-strategy-for-bermuda-stem-maggot\/","title":{"rendered":"Drought Management Strategy for Bermuda Stem Maggot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to Lisa Baxter, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Forage Specialist, drought-like conditions this summer are forcing Georgia forage producers to delay treatment for Bermudagrass Stem Maggot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-202\" src=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/files\/2019\/08\/forage-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/files\/2019\/08\/forage.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/files\/2019\/08\/forage-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/files\/2019\/08\/forage-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/site.extension.uga.edu\/burkeag\/files\/2019\/08\/forage-207x138.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, parts of Georgia are experiencing abnormally dry conditions.\u00a0 Normally, it is recommended to apply a pyrethroid insecticide labeled for forages 7-10 days after a harvest.\u00a0 With a lack of rain across the state this summer, treatment timelines need to be altered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is that, in a drought, we don\u2019t have green leaves seven days after harvest. If there aren\u2019t green leaves, there are no adult flies out there and that is what the pyrethroid is killing \u2014 the adult flies \u2014 not the other stages of the stem maggot,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, Baxter is recommending that Georgia forage producers hold off on the first treatment if they are experiencing below normal rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Burke County Extension Office.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to Lisa Baxter, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Forage Specialist, drought-like conditions this summer are forcing Georgia forage producers to delay treatment for Bermudagrass Stem Maggot.
