A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

Dr. Prostko (UGA weed scientist) sent some great information regarding herbicides. Google/AI (Artificial Intelligence) is not a valid place to get pesticide recommendations. Sonalan or Ethalfuralin is a grass herbicide, commonly used in broadleaf plants. However, Google AI will tell you it can be used in field corn, just not for feeding livestock. There is a reason Sonalan is not labeled for use in field corn. See the screenshot below of the results from Google.

In the next picture, you will notice “yellow herbicide” injury on field corn. (Source: S. Berger, IFAS).

Enlist Field Corn System

Historically, Enlist® (i.e. 2,4-D choline) weed control systems have been used in cotton and soybeans. Until recently there hasn’t been a corn hybrid that worked well with Enlist. Dr. Prostko was recently made aware of that Pioneer has one available (P13777PWUE). The next picture is 2024 yield data from Pioneer. There has not been very many Enlist/corn research trials conducted by UGA at this time. It is in the plans to conduct some this year. Note: Enlist® field corn hybrids are tolerant to 4 different herbicides including 2,4-D choline, Roundup® (glyphosate), Liberty® (glufosinate), and Assure® II (quizalofop).

This next picture is showing Enlist weed control from a trial conducted in 2018. NTC=Non Treated Control

Conventional Field Corn have Herbicide Options. Every once in a while we receive a call regarding whether or not there are any herbicides available for conventional corn varieties. The answer is YES.

A few caveats- some tank mixes are not compatible and are prohibited. The label is the law. Also, if Counter is used in-furrow for soil insects/nematodes, then Callisto, Revulin Q, and Steadfast Q CANNOT be applied post emergence.

Be sure to give us a call should you have any questions or concerns.
