There has not been any Southern Corn Rust found in the sentinel plot in Bulloch County\u00a0yet. Be prepared to protect your corn as we move forward and I will keep you updated with anymore finds and will continue to sample the plot weekly in Bulloch County.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bob Kemerait has listed\u00a05\u00a0points to consider for southern corn rust:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">1. Southern corn rust is the most impo<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">rtant disease affecting corn in Georgia.<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">2. \u00a0Southern corn rust was found\u00a0yesterday in a very small amount in Seminole County on corn at the R2\/blister stage.<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">3. \u00a0The disease can spread rapidly in storms and also with irrigation. \u00a0Conditions last week were favorable for development and spread.<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">4.\u00a0\u00a0Now that we have found it, I have enough respect for the disease to say that growers in the southwestern part of the state\u00a0whose corn has reached (or is about to reach) tassel growth\u00a0stage an application of fungicide to protect the crop. \u00a0Growers in other areas removed from extreme SW Georgia should consider to monitor the spread of the disease. \u00a0Some may want to make fungicide application either as a 1) safeguard or because 2) they are already making a trip across the field to spray something else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">5. \u00a0If northern corn leaf blight is not a problem in a field, then growers have many fungicide options, to include tebuconazole to manage rust. \u00a0For longer protective windows or where NCLB is also a problem, growers should apply strobilurins or fungicides that\u00a0include some combination of\u00a0strobilurins, triazoles, and SDHI active ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Asian Soybean Rust<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">As of yesterday, Asian soybean rust has\u00a0been found in small amounts\u00a0on KUDZU in the following Georgia counties:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">Miller, <\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">Baker and <\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">Grady.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif'\">We can assume that soybean rust is present in low amounts throughout Southwest Georgia. <span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">The Bulloch County soybean rust sentinel plot will\u00a0begin to be monitored later this month and sampled weekly for the presence of rust.\u00a0You can go to the following site for the latest update on positive soybean rust finds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbr.ipmpipe.org\/cgi-bin\/sbr\/public.cgi\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">https:\/\/sbr.ipmpipe.org\/cgi-bin\/sbr\/public.cgi<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Southern Corn Rust Southern corn rust was identified in Seminole County yesterday and\u00a0can be\u00a0a serious threat to our corn production.\u00a0Growers\u00a0in our area should definitely be on alert.
